πŸ“Š Understanding Your Results

Square Feet β€” Total lawn area to be sodded. Used to order sod from suppliers.

Pallets β€” Full pallets needed including 5–10% waste for cuts. Standard pallets cover 400–500 sq ft.

Cost Estimate β€” Material cost only. Does not include topsoil preparation, delivery or installation labor.

How the Sod Calculator Works

Our sod calculator determines your lawn’s total square footage, converts it to pallets and estimates material cost based on your selected grass type. The calculator automatically includes a waste factor for edge cuts.

The Sod Formula

Step 1: Area (sq ft) = Length Γ— Width
Step 2: Pallets = Area Γ· Pallet Coverage (round up)
Step 3: Add 5–10% for cuts and irregular shapes
Step 4: Cost = Area Γ— Price per sq ft

Example: 40Γ—25 ft lawn = 1,000 sq ft. At 450 sq ft/pallet = 2.22 pallets β€” order 3. At $0.45/sq ft = $450 in materials.

Sod Grass Types β€” Price and Climate Guide

Grass TypeClimatePrice/sqftBest For
BermudaWarm / South$0.35–0.45High traffic, full sun
St. AugustineWarm / Coastal$0.40–0.55Shade tolerance, Gulf Coast
ZoysiaWarm / Transition$0.40–0.65Dense, low maintenance
Tall FescueCool / Transition$0.30–0.45Shade, drought tolerance
Kentucky BluegrassCool / North$0.45–0.65Premium look, cold hardy

πŸ“ Real Project Example

50Γ—30 ft lawn, rectangle, few obstacles:

  • Area: 1,500 sq ft
  • Pallets: 1,500 Γ· 450 = 3.33 β†’ order 4 pallets (+10% waste = 3.67)
  • Rolls alternative: 1,500 Γ· 10 = 150 rolls of 2Γ—5 ft sod
  • Weight: 4 pallets Γ— ~2,000 lbs = ~8,000 lbs (4 tons) β€” forklift delivery, not a pickup
  • Cost check: 1,500 sq ft at ~$0.50 = ~$750 + delivery

Install sod the day it arrives β€” it heats up and dies on the pallet. A second delivery costs another fee and the color may not match.

πŸ“š Sources & Methodology

How we calculate. Step 1: lawn area in square feet = length Γ— width (break irregular lawns into rectangles). Step 2: pallets = area Γ· 450 (standard pallet coverage), always rounded up. Step 3: rolls = area Γ· 10 (standard 2Γ—5 ft roll). We recommend adding 5–10% extra for cutting around curves, trees and beds.

Cross-checked. Our 450 sq ft/pallet figure matches sod industry references; actual pallet size varies by farm (400–600 sq ft), so confirm with your supplier before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about sod installation and lawn establishment.

How many pallets of sod for 1,000 square feet?
At 450 sq ft per pallet: 1,000 Γ· 450 = 2.22 pallets β€” order 3 full pallets to allow for cuts and waste.
When is the best time to install sod?
Warm-season grasses: Late spring to early summer. Cool-season grasses: Early fall (September–October). Never install when freezing temperatures are expected within 4–6 weeks.
